Tribute

Stanley G. Wells was born September 4, 1930, and passed on March 9, 2024. Stan was the youngest of five sons of Leroy T. and Helen R. Wells, all of which have predeceased him. The Wells home was in Wantagh, L.I., N.Y. and Stan attended W.C. Mepham High School in Belmore N.Y. and Hofstra University in Hempstead N.Y. On the first day of college, he met his lifetime partner, Pat Ferguson, at a freshman tea dance and two years later they began their married adventure that lasted 70 years. After a tour of duty in Korea as a Sargent in the 2nd Infantry Division, Stan held a series of progressive technical and sales jobs in various areas of the country that ultimately concluded with the position of V.P. of Marketing for a large company located in New Jersey. A 1972 temporary assignment in California resulted in Stan, Pat and their three children falling in love with the Bay Area. So, in 1976 they moved from New Jersey to San Leandro and started S.G. Wells Inc., an industrial gas and welding supply business. In subsequent years, a medical gas business, WELMED, Inc. and Wexco, Inc., an exporting business were also established with offices in San Leandro and San Francisco. In 1980 Pat and Stan settled down in Lafayette and remained there for 20 years. They sold all their businesses in 1989, retired, and started cruising and traveling around the world. Retirement was short lived however, as their youngest son, Douglas convinced them to work with him in a start-up business in cryogenics, rare and specialty gas distribution to the budding Biotech industry. That business, CRYOSPEC, Inc., based in Fremont and South San Francisco became very successful and was sold in 2015 enabling a second retirement. Stan was often sought out as advisor and mentor to many people who he touched during his carrier. In 2005 Pat and Stan moved to Rossmoor, in Walnut Creek, CA. where they participated in many of the clubs and activities available in Rossmoor. Pat became active in the Art Society while Stan not only enjoyed golf but became President of The Mt. Diablo Genealogical Society, was Founding member and Chair of the Mutual 40 Green and Recycling Committee, also served on the Finance Committee. Stan is survived by one daughter Diane, two sons, Jamie, and Douglas and one grandson Steven. He also leaves many friends, nieces and nephews throughout the country and the world and his beloved rescue dogs Mia and Chico. A private ceremony will be held for Stan, who will be buried in Oakmont Memorial Park, Lafayette, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stan’s name to: American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ASPCA.org
