Beryl Van Noy Obituary –

VAN NOY – Beryl passed away on February 26, 2022. Born Beryl Joyce Swanson in Greeley, Colorado on February 7, 1934, she was the youngest of two children of Martin and Dorothy (Andrews) Swanson. Beryl, and her sister Norma, grew up in Greeley. Beryl then attended two years of college at Brigham Young University in Utah. Beryl went to California as a vacation and to help her friend Lucy Krings move there, but Beryl got a job with the state in Sacramento and stayed for a year and a half. Eventually Beryl and Lucy were joined by Norma. Lucy and Beryl remained the closest of friends for the rest of her life. Later Beryl moved to Oakland, working as a staff accountant for the majority of her career for various firms. She married Herbert “Thad” Van Noy on March 14, 1960 in Logan, UT. Beryl and Thad were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Oakland 9th Ward. Beryl filled her two-year mission in Oakland. Later she joined the Castro Valley 2nd Ward.

Her interest in genealogy led to, essentially, a second career as a volunteer researcher at the FamilySearch Library at the Oakland Temple. A specialist in Swedish research, Beryl helped countless people discover ancestors in the US, Sweden and beyond.

Beryl also loved drawing, listening to music and sewing. And she really loved reading. She acquired complete sets of romance and mystery novels from several authors. Her book collection, numbering in the thousands, also included many history, art and religious titles.

Beryl was preceded in death by her parents, husband Thad, and sister Norma Arlowe. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Duane Arlowe of Albuquerque, NM; her nephew Rob Arlowe, his partner Maggie, his children Barrett and Adelaide of Albuquerque, NM; her nephew Steve Arlowe and his wife Danielle, their daughters Ruby and Josephine, of Edina, MN.

A memorial service will be held at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, California on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 2pm, where Beryl will be laid to rest next to Thad in the Meditation section of the park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Oakland California FamilySearch Library Contact the library at 4766 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, CA 94602, phone (510) 531-3905.
