Kevin Markley Werk

April 14, 1961 ~ September 16, 2021 (age 60) 60 Years Old

Tribute

Kevin Markley Werk, age 60, passed away on September 16, 2021 due to complications from sarcoidosis and heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Kirsten Werk, son Kaden Werk and wife Rachel Werk, son Kobi Werk, siblings Richard Werk and wife Vivi, Michael Werk and wife Rose, Charles Werk and wife Linda, and Elizabeth Henry and husband Dean and all of their families, as well as many nieces and nephews and in-laws.

Kevin was born April 14, 1961 in Alameda, California as the youngest son of five children to Richard Henry Werk and Jacqueline Sutton. After attending schools in Alameda and graduating from Alameda High School in 1979, Kevin worked in his father’s meat business and became a journeyman sausage maker. After a few years, he learned about the tile and stone business and worked for the next 25 years as an installer, salesman, and inventory specialist. During his last 10 years of his life, he worked as a stockroom coordinator and inventory specialist on the campus of UC Berkeley in Stanley Hall.

In high school, Kevin was on the championship Alameda High School Football team his senior year. A natural athlete, Kevin also was on the track team as a shot-putter, and on the wrestling team. He also played linebacker on the football team at Laney College in Oakland where he was named the most valuable player. He made friends easily and maintained many of those friendships throughout his life.

After meeting Kirsten Griffiths at a church event and a brief 4-month courtship, he married her in 1992 in the Oakland LDS Temple. After living for four years in Washington state, they moved back to the Bay Area and settled in Brentwood, California where he remained until his death. They had two sons together, Kaden and Kobi.

Kevin was also a faithful member and held the position of Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed serving the congregation and had several teaching callings, gave missionary service, and was a scout leader for many years.

Kevin leaves behind many who love him and will miss him. Of those who had the opportunity to meet Kevin and get to know him, they would speak of his genuineness, his kindness, his smile, and his ability to make a person feel loved for who they are. He would seek out those who may have been overlooked and would make them feel welcome. He loved his family and his friends passionately. He was always ready to tell a good story or crack a string of one-liner jokes that would have you in stitches till you couldn’t breathe (and he would enjoy every minute of it).  Always the competitor, he loved playing and watching sports and was an avid fan of his teams. The world was a better place because he was in it and will always be missed and never forgotten.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1102 McClarren Rd, Brentwood, California on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 11:30 A.M. Internment will be at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, California.
