Melvin “Mel” “Loraine” Peres

Resident of Martinez

On August 13, 2020, Mel “Loraine” was reunited with the love of his life, Shirley Peres, in heaven. He was 83 years old and in the company of loving family.

Mel was born in La Harpe, Kansas. The second of six children. His family moved to CA in 1942. On March 10, 1956, he married Shirley (Lee) Peres. They had a daughter, Christy, and a son, Randy. In 1966, he moved his family to their custom home in Martinez. He spent countless hours remodeling his prized house and lived there till the end of his days (54 years).

Mel worked a paper route at the age of 13. A maintenance man at his parent’s church. A caster at American Standard Corporation for 20 years until he retired. After retirement, he started a brass business in which he employed his family and neighbors. He completed his contractor’s license and started his own business, Contra Costa Mantels, with help from his son and partner, Randy. He was a code enforcement officer for the City of Lafayette. Mel worked at FedEx Express (Pacheco CA) until 2018 when he was forced to retire because health conditions.

Mel was a devoted husband, father and follower of Jesus Christ, his savior. He was a deacon, treasurer, youth director, bible study teacher at many churches over the years. He was instrumental in the planting of Tabernacle Baptist Church (Concord CA).

Mel was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Peres; his father Ernest Peres; his mother Edna Peres. He is survived by his daughter Christy (Brodie) Englund; his son Randy Peres; his eight grandchildren Lindy, Calley, Cheyne, Weylin, Dylan Englund and Chantel, Curtis, Chase Peres; his great-grandchildren Brandon, Madison, Jesslin, Lelani, Cheyenne and Colton; his sisters Loreta (Ken) Wendell and Wanda (Dave) DeMartile; his brother Darrell Peres; also numerous nephews and nieces.

On Friday, August 28th, 2020 at 12pm, a graveside service to commemorate Mel’s life will be held at Oakmont Memorial Park & Mortuary, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette, CA. Only a limited amount of seating will be available due to COVID-19 restrictions. Contact Christy or Randy for availability.
